The Feast of Sant’Efisio in Cagliari: Complete Guide for May 1st
The Feast of Sant’Efisio is the most important religious celebration in Sardinia. Every May 1st, for over 370 years, Cagliari renews its vow to the Saint who, according to tradition, freed the city from the plague in 1652.
This guide is designed to help you experience the feast like a true local: schedules, route, practical tips, what to see, and where to position yourself.
Origins and Significance of the Feast of Sant’Efisio
Sant’Efisio was a Roman soldier who converted to Christianity and was martyred in Nora in 303 AD. In 1652, during a plague outbreak, Cagliari invoked the Saint, promising an annual procession in exchange for the city’s deliverance.
Since then, the vow has been fulfilled every year without interruption since 1657: one of the oldest traditions in Europe.
